How Do You Choose the Right Home Business?

Are you thinking of starting a home-based business?  How do you choose the right one for your circumstances?  I've personally owned several businesses in the last 15 years, and with that experience, plus the research I've done on small business, I believe I can help you find a company that fits your goals!

When you are considering home business options, you first need to decide WHY you want to have a business. Write down these reasons in detail - they will help you focus on your goals!  Keep in mind that your "why's" are not just things like "make more money" - they are what you would do with the money!  Do you want to:  Take a cruise?  Save for your kids' college fund?  Visit family who live far away?  Give more to your church or charity?  Or maybe just make an extra $500/month to help ease the load of your bills?  List these whys and you will have established your base for the next few steps!

Next, decide on the TYPE of business that fits who you are and what you like to do (or not do), and how much TIME you have to devote to running a business.  You can devote 20-30 hours a week to your business, or 5, depending on your circumstances.  For instance, you may be a mom with toddlers who has very little time and you don't want to run a party-plan business because you need to be home to tuck your kids in at night.  Your kids may be growing up and in school, so you have more free time, but you don't necessarily want to go back to work.  You know it's difficult reporting to a job you don't like or working for a boss that makes it hard to take time off when your kids are sick.  Or maybe you already have a job and are simply looking for a side business to bring in some extra income.  You'd like that extra money to help out with bills or save up for something you really want.  Perhaps you love helping people, and working a few hours at a business that provides a service that people need is right up your alley.

Now put on paper WHAT your day would look like if you were a home-business owner?  Would you be on the computer, on the phone, meeting people individually, doing parties in people's houses, dropping off catalogs or chasing daycare kids around the back yard?  Do you want to work solely from home, be dependent on people coming to you or do you want to go to them?

How much MONEY do you have to invest in your business?  Don't fool yourself - anyone who says that you can start a home business for free is pulling your leg!  You will probably have start up fees for kits, products, training, websites, advertising, leads, business cards, etc.  However, working from home is still much less expensive than a traditional business or franchise which can cost in the neighborhood of hundreds of thousands of dollars.  At a bare minimum, you should plan on having at least $500 to start your business.  If you don't have it, maybe you could borrow it from a good friend?  (I don't recommend putting charges on a credit card unless you're sure you can make money quickly with your chosen business, and can pay off your start-up fees the next month.)  Remember - legitimate business expenses can be written off on your taxes each year!  (Contact a tax professional for details.)

Finally, you need to research the types of businesses out there that meet the criteria for your "why", type, time available, what you'll be doing, and also make sure you can secure the money you need to start.  The best business is one that meets your criteria, and which can be self-sustaining financially in a short period of time.  One caution:  Do your research carefully!  There are a couple of helpful resources out there, such as Inc. magazine's list of the 500 fastest growing privately-help companies, and the Direct Selling Association member list.

When I re-evaluated the type of business I wanted to have at this time in my life, and after detailed research, I found a wonderful company that reached #1 on the Inc. 500 list, and was listed again the next year!  I don't have to spend tons of time working my business, and I can work from home by phone, email and internet - no parties, no catalogs, no begging people to buy overpriced items they don't need!  Although I needed to invest some money to start, the company has online training which shows how you can earn your money back quickly!  Plus, you will receive support from myself and my business partners at each step along your path - you are never alone.  If you have a desire to succeed at your own home-based business, I urge you to save yourself months of time and research and check it out now to see if it fits with your goals:
